Box art of Blizzard's World of Warcraft MMORPG - Image 1If you're tired of creating your own World of Warcraft AddOns on Notepad, then you'll be glad of this new application released by Microsoft to help budding developers design their ideal addons with more ease.

Based on Microsoft's Visual Studio, the AddOn Studio is a GUI-based editor that allows you to create your own custom AddOns compatible with the latest patch of WoW that you can use in the game.

Here are the features AddOn Studio has to offer:

  • Visual Design Surface for visually designing your controls in World of Warcraft in a drag and drop manner.
  • Lua code editor with syntax hi-lighting and code completion.
  • Intellisense for FrameXML.
  • Automatically generates TOC files.
  • Auto generated event LUA event handlers.
  • Automatic deployment while developing
  • ACE2 addon development wizards
It definitely beats coding in Notepad since the application builds the code from existing AddOn templates. The most work developers have to do while using AddOn Studio is to customize the AddOn to their specific liking.

Dan Fernandez, Lead Product Manager of Visual Studio, even provided a short demo that you can view through the source link below. Since the application is based on an open-source platform, AddOn Studio is free to download from their website at CodePlex. It may take a while to download though, since the file is over 50MB but for budding developers it's well worth the wait.

Based on the comments I've read on this, it's not mentioned that some form of Visual Studio is required as is NETframework 3.5
