Conan of Cimmeria - Image 1 It's been said that interest in any MMORPG normally waxes and wanes, but Funcom quest designer for Age of Conan">Joel Bylos, Funcom's Age of Conan (PC, Xbox 360) quest designer, has one particular MMORPG in mind: Blizzard's World of Warcraft. Simply put, Bylos believes that World of Warcraft is losing its appeal.

Mr. Bylos described it as "a feeling on the internet" that the luster that had once marked Blizzard's World of Warcraft is now fading.  Furthermore, Bylos said that the mistake that developers make is that they try to beat WoW at WoW's own game-essentially making a clone of Blizzard's MMORPG that has a tough time competing with the already established WoW.

Which is why, Mr. Bylos added, Funcom intends to take a different approach to the MMORPG genre: Age of Conan is going to stand on its own two feet instead of merely basking in the shadow of Blizzard's World of Warcraft. Whether Funcom succeeds or not is something worth watching out for.

 » Oh Of Course...

This one slides right off into the recycle bin with any number of other naysayings leveled at World of Warcraft. It seems that every so-called game maker that comes out with a new title finds it obligatory to take shots at Blizzard's money maker.

It's not so much news as it is just talk done more for the sake of saying "Hey all you WoW players! I have a game over here LOOOK!!!" In fact, if you take the time to look at any of the many detractions pointed in WoW's direction it comes back to that. It's true whether it's a game developer who would like to have some if not all of WoW's player base as their own or non-WoW gamers wishing their game was as talked about.

In short, everyone wants to be king or stand with the king and failing that ...they offer up the potshots. Age of Conan is no WoW or even a substitute but it's gameplay seems to fall into some familiar territory of the God of War and Heavenly Sword variety... but hey at least they're not treading down that WoW path.
