And it's not about skill. It's about limitation. Melee warriors usually have to keep running from obstruction to obstruction to avoid being targeted by the ranged combatants in an Arena showdown, and it's getting some folk pretty frustrated at World of Warcraft.

World of Warcraft Arena - The Circle of Blood - Remember these pillars? - Image 1And although the idea of dropping all obstructions in the Arena has been suggested, it doesn't look to be the proper solution. The real deal behind why melee are screaming line of sight exploits and why ranged are ranting about folks playing "ring around the rosie" is that the game itself limits your options. In fact, the game actually classifies warriors as melee or ranged, which is the biggest limitation for a fantasy game.

The basic melee weapon, the dagger, is an ever deadlier weapon in flight. Swords and axes - heck even halberds - can be delivered airborne. In comparison, ranged folk could easily brandish a melee weapon to defend themselves.

No matter what Blizzard tries to do in order to balance things, the game mechanics still stand: either you take the beating while darting for your opponent's neck, or you take enemies from afar with even more limiting spell cast times and missile launch times.

Plus, you either cast or launch while the target is in your LOS or the attack cancels and "that's all folks!" So what do Arena players have to look forward to? A game of "hide and seek" and "killer in the dark" (without the dark) and those who don't lag first just might win. Arena is may just still be about skill, but not every skill.

Big ol' blue Blizzard may try to correct issues of LOS with new Arena maps, but we're not holding our breath for anything.
