Wallpaper for Blizzard's World of Warcraft MMORPG - Image 1The AFK issue for Battlegrounds has always been a contested topic for PVP-intensive gamers who are serious about earning enough Battleground Marks and Honor Points while playing World of Warcraft. Bornakk mentions that the Blizzard dev team will be implementing a Hotfix that will help reduce the number of AFK reports issued while in a battleground.

This will be implemented to help improve the quality of play and streamline the system when flagging someone as AFK during the battle.

Here's some more information found on the World of Warcraft website regarding AFK reporting:

A new feature for reporting players as being AFK in battlegrounds was added in patch 2.2. Right-click on their portrait, minimap dot, world map dot, or raid tab, and then select "report as AFK". When enough reports are registered, a 60 second debuff will begin to count down. It also prevents you from getting battleground marks, and completing your daily quest if it is for that battleground. To remove this, the player must enter PVP combat, as attacking the neutral mobs will not remove the debuff. You must attack something that is pvp flagged.

Bornakk also mentions that the In-Game Support Department will be regularly checking for inactive players and will be implementing disciplinary measures for those going against their policies. Hopefully, this will prevent players from abusing the AFK exploit any further and just go right into the heat of things rather than sit around doing nothing.

 » Tool or Joke?

The AFK reporting tool is nice in theory but laughable at best. Why does it require multiple reports from players that someone is AFK? As someone who does pvp, I don't have time to keep checking around the map to see who isn't fighting so I can report them. This tattle-tales feature only serves to distract from the gameplay objective.

To illustrate that point, go into Alterac Valley and marvel at how quickly the chat text fills up with comments regarding people being afk and attempts by other players to get everyone to report the afkers. This happens all the time and presumably players are using the AFK report tool but still afk players remain in the battleground often for the duration of battle... doing nothing.

A better solution would be for Blizzard to apply a timeout debuff ejection for inactivity in a battleground. Without any other player having to actively report anything an inactive player would get the timeout debuff after 2 minutes. If they fail to engage in pvp combat with the other faction they're kicked out of the battleground in 60 seconds *AND* get a Deserter's debuff applied to them so they can't simply jump back in to the next nearest battleground right away.

Blizzard needs to make it annoying for people to AFK in the battlegrounds and what better means of doing so than to kick them out and hit them with a Deserter debuff? As it is now, the AFK reporting tool makes things annoying for those of us who actually enter the battlegrounds to do pvp... as we watch afk players sit there and sit there despite our reports.
