Utgarde Keep, a new instance in Blizzard's upcoming Wrath of the Lich King for WoW - Image 1For those of you World of Warcraft gamers who aren't satisfied with the rather threadbare page for the upcoming Wrath of the Lich King expansion, insiders from the Worldofraids forums have uncovered a hidden easter egg revealing more details on one of the instances from the expansion.

Not normally accessible on the WoW website, the URL provided on the read link below is a sneak peek at the Utgarde Keep instance dungeon that high-level players will be able to access once Northrend and its surrounding areas go live next year.

You can tell how much detail the developers from Blizzard have put into the new areas that will go up with the new expansion. The visuals, from the environmental textures to the new creature models are just amazing, to say the least.

In a short interview with some of the developers working on WotLK, they mentioned that they wanted to go back to the roots of designing geography and a setting reminiscent of the classic world of Azeroth. After their foray into designing the otherworldly Outlands, they wanted players to return to the familiar zones that were featured in the lore of the original Warcraft game. They had this to say about the new instance dungeon:

Utgarde’s design ties closely into the creation of Howling Fjord as a whole. Less high-concept than the otherworldly and wildly diverse regions of Outland, we want the zones in Northrend to follow a geographic theme that’s more consistent with the familiar geography of Azeroth. Many of Northrend’s regions originally appeared in Warcraft III – such as Howling Fjord, one of the two starting areas and also where Utgarde Keep is prominently located. Howling Fjord’s Azerothian feel stands in sharp contrast to the stark, alien beauty of Hellfire Peninsula, and this should help players establish an immediate connection to the expansion’s new environments.

Expect Wrath of the Lich King to go live in Spring of 2008.
