Why do we have maintenance (a.k.a. downtime)? - Image 1

In life there are things we have learned to accept and never question, such as why the sky is blue, why the earth is round, and why we have downtime in World of Warcraft. This was the topic of a very heated discussion over the WoW Europe threads where players have taken to airing their concerns.

It's normal for players to get frustrated at not being able to play WoW. Especially with other players complaining that the conditions have become worse after the maintenance (that derived them of playing time). Blizzard poster/ Forum Moderator Thundgot gave a brief explanation regarding this:

A maintenance is carried out to do certain measures to ensure the continued safe operation of the realms. Sometimes a maintenance contains tweaks and additions, even patches, and unfortunately some of these can have unexpected side-effects, like this time.

However, to say that all maintenances cause problems is simply a result of selective memory, which is of course a quite normal reaction those times it does go wrong. To counter that impression I can just point to last week and the implementation of patch 2.1.0 which saw a few minor issues but generally went very smoothly.

We're going to have to take what he said at face value. Come on guys let's cut Blizzard some slack, you can imagine how difficult it is to maintain a system that large. Be sure to keep checking back here for more news on World of Warcraft.
