When talking exchange rates, several factors need to be taken into consideration for the currency in question. And for gamers, don't think for a minute this is limited to the likes of Wallstreet. We just picked up this recently concluded study, which analyzed the exchange rate of World of Warcraft's gold in the U.S. and in Europe. The study averaged how much per 1000 gold would cost when bought from third-party vendors.

The Graph below averages their findings for all servers in the U.S. and Europe:

The exxhange rates

Going into detail, it found  the average price for 1000 gold for the U.S. servers to be at $ 259.52, while Europe's servers showed a dramatically lower price of $ 31.17. Based on these results, the study came up with three possible reasons for the disparity in the exchange rates:
  • Higher U.S. demand due to a higher population.
  • Higher demand due to more disposable income on the part of the U.S.
  • Poor Policing - American servers may much higher security levels, which makes farming far more hazardous as compared to Europe.
Given that Burning Crusade has just launched, it will be interesting to see and compare this to the new (expensive) gear we may see at the auction houses. Click on the read link to see the full list of realm price exchanges.
