World of Warcraft: The Burning Crusade - Illidan Stormrage - Image 1

World of Warcraft cinematics have always been pretty and uberly cool, oozing with killer CGI graphics. One player from the WoW Forums wonders whether it's possible for Blizzard to use such graphics in-game.

Some players stated that if Blizzard went on that route, they'd lose customers because the graphics would require massively steep system requirements, while others argued which one is more important, graphics or gameplay. Blizzard poster Nethaera dropped by and answered the opening post (the thread strayed to a PC specs cat fight):

Could we? Most likely so. But that would mean limiting who could play the game. We also enjoy the style that we have and while we continue to make improvements, want to be very careful in how we go about doing it so that we can allow people to play without the need of needing to do massive upgrades.

It is possible, though our pockets will most likely be tons lighter after our PCs bite the dust from the said graphics.

 » Too Much Extra?

I have a friend who plays WoW and has played Guild Wars. She claims that the detailed graphics of GW easily trump that of WoW and didn't put any added load on or require upgrades to her system. This of course begs the question then.. is Blizzard really giving us the best possible graphics?

In my opinion, probably not but then as Nethaera alluded to in responding to the player's question, Blizz really wants the game to be playable to the greatest number of people. Granted, you don't get to be number one on the MMORPG heap by being elitist and/or exclusionary.

If recent nerfs to certain npc's and the grind process are any indication, Blizzard is committed to making the game as accessible to the masses as possible. Games that are easy to get into and advance in are far more likely to capture and retain gamers than not and this really seems to be Blizzard's angle from all sides.

Just so long as it isn't made so accessible to all comers that no true challenges remain and so long as new content holds things players just have to get... Blizzard's World of Warcraft should have more than enough ground to run on.
