We've been trolling the World of Warcraft Forums for a long time and well, we're sure you can imagine the several hundred things that players post about. This time, a player asked why Blizzard posters respond to "silly threads" while not responding to important suggestions and other threads of the like.Blizzard poster Vaneras dropped by the said thread and explained that reading and forwarding suggestions and feedback (as well as reply to "silly threads") from the forums is part of the job as Community Managers. And that goes along with cleaning up and moderating the forums. Here's an excerpt of the lengthy post: We spend quite a bit of our time reading and forwarding your feedback, and that includes trawling through those massive threads full of class concerns and suggestions. We do not always post in such threads, but that is not the same as they have not been read. When we have feedback available to give, we will post it.
Posting in silly threads is, believe it or not, also a part of our job. Silly threads may not be important for gameplay related issues, but they are most certainly important for the community spirit and atmosphere. Silly threads are meant to be pure fun and lighthearted, which in my opinion is a great tool to sometimes get a fresh perspective on things and they often serve as a healthy contrast to all the doom and gloom you otherwise will see. Silly threads are often popular and fun and they tend to live very long. [...] Blue replies to more serious threads rarely stay bumped for nearly as long. Best of all, it takes no more than a minute or two to make a post in a silly thread, because it requires no lengthy research or verification procedures to make them. So what sort of posts would help you get some blue text on your thread? There really isn't a particular thing to lure the blues to you on the WoW Forums, unless you like CM posts like, "Thread locked [insert reason here]." |

I don't think that "lighthearted" was the intended definition of "silly." I strongly suspect the words "stupid" and "pointless" would have been more appropriate. While I can't cite one ATM, such pointless threads would be of the genre "Wouldn't it be great if warriors could cast fireballs?"
