Before Arthas the Death Knight, there existed the equally infamous Kel'Thuzad. And even before his existence as a Lich, Kel'Thuzad was most famously known as a necromancer - mages who specialized in the control of the very fabric of life and death.
Given that the job class has such strong connections to World of Warcraft's lore, the players are wondering if the developers will get around to putting the Necromancer alongside the likes of the Death Knight hero class. Here was Nethaera's point on the whole matter:
We have many interesting classes that we could implement, but like all things, we needed to decide which classes would be the most interesting and capable of being robust additions to the game from the start. The Necromancer is one class that has been in consideration before. Who knows. Perhaps someday the Necromancer will come into play within the World of Warcraft, but that is something for the future to decide.
On a related note, WoW players did point out that the necromancer might be tricky to balance, given it appeared to share skills and attributes with the already-existing Warlock job class. We'll see how this situation develops.
