WoW's Alterac Vallry map - Image 1

If you go to the official World of Warcraft community forum, you'll see that one of the most contested topics right now revolves around the Alterac Valley. This discussion was started by Horde members saying that the said map favors the Alliance - that should explain why it's being hotly debated.

A few of the reasons they pointed out include making it past the bridge chokepoint first, and the Stormpike graveyard being more secluded and defended than Frostwolf. On the other hand, Alliance members maintain that the Horde always loses on this map because of AFK players as well as lack of defense.

Anyway, the Horde are now challenging Blizzard to flip the map and make an official win-loss record for both factions. It is a bold challenge indeed and we're excited to see how Blizzard will respond to it.

This argument is as old as the game. The geograpnhy favors Alliance by provided to many choke points and easily defensable postions. 4 or 5 well places Alii can keep 20+ Horde at bay in certain area. Nothing like this exists for Horde except maybe at the middle of the field, near Galv.

Alliance generally tries the "Rush the General" tactic. Alliance loses it's fair share, but they are just good too. If a battleground needs fixed, it should be EoTS. If you lose your towers and die, you get camped up on the shelf until the other faction wins.

I don't play WoW anymore but I did so for about a year and just recently quit. Anyways, I didn't do much raiding. I focused mainly on PvP and spent a lot of time in AV. Alliance definitely has the advantage.

Well horde, sure, Alliance may have an unfair advantage in AV..
but it seems to me you almost always win in AB, WSG, and typically, EotS as well.
Whoopdid doo. 3/4 battlegrounds is enough for me, if I were horde.

QQ.

Ab and WSG are fairly even maps... so you say horde wins those ... AV isn't fair which u agree.. so horde loses those... makes no sense... so why should they keep Av so unfair... so alliance can get a free win?

Anyone who has ever run pvp can tell you a simple fact that repeats over and over... Horde pwns in AB, WSG and now EotS mostly and Alliance generally always takes AV. Of course Horde success in other battlegrounds *always* gets attributed to them playing better strategies or going in with premades opposed to pugs.

I've seen plenty of Horde premades and Alliance is mostly pugs that catch hell most everywhere but AV. In AV I've seen something that I usually don't and that's Alliance working together. The other battlegrounds never seem to have that same team effort that I've witnessed in AV consistently.

Could layout of AV be a factor? Sure. Could the Horde just be whining because there's a battleground they don't pwn consistently? Absolutely. I say let the battlegrounds be and if the organization and premades of the Horde are so good they'll find a way to win AV.

Alliance definately have an advatage in AV. I can see why a lot of Horde want this changed. If all you do is PVP getting those last upgrade to your High Warlord set might take you 40 games of AV just to get one item. One thing that has not been mentioned is how Alliance strong holds differ from Horde's. Alliance have archers that will do 600+ each attack. For the Horde to capture, it makes it terribly difficult even if only defended by a couple of Alliance. If you look at all the other BG's they are semitrical; each side is pretty much identical. Horde pwns in these BG's. If all things are equal Horde will win. My theory to explain this is simply that the Horde are out numbered. Having to level up being Horde in a PVP environment out numbered and always being jumped my multiple Alliance breads a better PVP player. Give us the chance to turn the tables by switching what ends of the map Horde and Alliance start from in AV and you'll see the end of the Alliance reign in AV.

i say it favour alliance to the very core of pvp ally win in 10-19 but horde win in 20-29 but ally win in 30-39 and 40-49 but horde rip in 50-59 60-69 but it is just about even in 70

 » quit whining

i come from a server where horde out numbers alliance 2to1 There is not advantage to either side, horde never plays defense, so its their own fault alliances gets through first. And what about the fact that alliance has to actually fight the warmasters, have you all forgotten about that? Stop QQing and go to work, dont you all have a job to do.

 » It's A Gimp Map

I've played heaps and heaps of AV; hell, I've played heaps of every BG. I have over 100,000 hks, exalted with all BGs and I feel as though I've seen enough of all sides (multiple toons on both factions) to say that this is not simply a matter of horde whining.

Horde can and DOES play defense. I've played on numerous forced AV teams where we have solid defense but the map just favours Alliance defense more. The reason people all say "Alliance just defends better" is because it quite simply looks like they defend better. Consider the geography around FW and SP GYs. SP is extremely hard to flank, and even still, to flank means dropping in from the respawn site or around the corner, where you're still in range of a good static defense. FW on the other hand, you can surround that a full 360 degrees, bait the guards any way you like, and hit and run. SP, when you're in, you're in. You drop into the GY and you can't scale those mountains to get out - there are no hit and runs. FW is wide open - you can attack from anywhere and leave from anywhere.

You don't even need to get into the bridge because SP is THAT clutch. I think the bridge and towers on Alliance side are pretty stacked, as well as the NPC density there; but I've also fought against tough Horde defense in the room and ramp before E & W FW Towers.

Honeslty, that's moot. Once Alliance has FW and Horde is struggling with SP (let's face it, that's always where it stalls) that's usually enough to turn the tides.

Again, it's not that Horde doesn't defend, it's just that much easier for Alliance to defend due to geography.

and the fact that horde can pull van alone?

First and foremost.. it's just a game.

It's all about how you play it. On Whisperwind server the Horde wins AV about 90% of the time. Map gimping aside it all boils down to how well the players play each time. Every single AV match is different and the outcome is completely up to the players, not the map.

It's almost impossible to single pull Van. I've played well over four-hundred AV and although the majority of the time Horde doesn't even attempt to single pull him, when they do attempt it, it usually fails miserable.

Trying to use that as an Alliance crutch is a straw argument...cause even by the time Horde is AT Van, Alliance has killed all the Marshalls already anyway. It's not because of "AFCavers" and it's not because Alliance is just better or stronger on D. If that were the case, Horde wouldn't demolish them in all the other BG's.

Personally, I don't mind Alliance winning AV all the time. If anything, it gives them encouragement to at least still queue up for BG's at all.
