What happens when you get three of the head honchos responsible for Blizzard's World of Warcraft to sit down and have a discussion about Wrath of the Lich King? You're going to get a lot of information about where the game will be going.Eurogamer recently had an interview with World of Warcraft producer J. Allen Brack, and lead designers Tom Chilton and Jeff Kaplan, where they spoke about a possible graphic update for the game as well as allowing both 10- and 25-player teams in all raid instances. While Wrath of the Lich King will be getting a good revamp with some new optional effects for those with high-end PCs, a complete engine overhaul is still being considered by the developers. This isn't a new idea to Blizzard though as Brack explained, "that's actually something we talk about every expansion, I'm positive we'll talk about it next expansion." Brack said that they are being very careful with this because games such as Ultima Online and EverQuest have attempted this, and met with limited success. He went on to explain this from both a gamer and developer's perspective: A lot of people continued to play with the original client, because it was faster, or they preferred it, or were just used to it or whatever. And so for me as a game developer, the idea that we would spend so much time and energy on something and have people go, 'meh, that's not really for me,' that's not very exciting. Another thing that was discussed in the interview was the decision the developers made to all the raid dungeons accessible to both 10- and 25-player parties. Kaplan reasoned out that they've seen significant success with the two 10-man raids that are already in the game which means that players enjoy the content. It's no surprise that this move has irked some hardcore players who feel that raiding might become a casual thing. Kaplan explained that they shouldn't feel this way and the devs still plan on supporting them: The point of this wasn't to make it so that all raiding was super-casual and everybody could do it. We wanted to preserve some of that hardcore raiding that exists - we have fully sponsored 25-person raiding guilds now, they're almost professional gamers at this point. So we really want to embrace those guys as a community as well. There were more topics discussed in the full interview including revamps of some mid-level content, comparisons with Burning Crusade, Death Knights, PvP, and more.
