The Dark portal may be opened by someone more uber than you from elsewhere.

Here's some good news for fledgling realms in World of Warcraft. According to Eyonix, one of Blizzard's blue-posting community managers, newer realms will be given more time to get up to speed before character transfers from other servers are allowed.

Let's get it straight from them, shall we? Eyonix writes,

Based on popular feedback, all new realms will now be eligible for Paid Character Transfers after 6 months of being open, instead of the previous 3 months. Realms not yet open for transfers will remain closed for 6 months, meaning if a realm has been open for 2 months, it will require another 4 months in order to be eligible as a transfer destination realm. All realms which are currently available for transfers will remain available. This extension was made to allow communities on new realms enough time to establish their position on the realm before allowing other characters to join.

While this isn't a perfect solution to the problem of veteran or souped-up characters messing up new realms by opening up events that haven't been done yet, at least there's a little more breathing room. Still, while many will probably complain, you have to admit that there's a reason for the addition of new servers: decongestion of the older ones. For the new servers out there and the players who have just started getting into the game, don't be surprised by any future rude awakenings, but don't hesitate to be appalled by the people who happen to mess with your realm.
